Awen Films

Overview

Awen Films is a New York–based production company working at the intersection of independent documentary and commissioned work for institutions, broadcasters, and cultural organisations. Their films explore history, politics, and social justice, while their production services support museums, NGOs, and news outlets with thoughtful, well crafted content.

The challenge

The logo and visual language felt static and decorative, not connected to the way they now work with light, archives, and layered narrative.

Internally they saw themselves as both an independent documentary studio and a flexible production house, but they lacked a clear way to explain this dual role without sounding confusing or “like two different companies.

Branding

This identity captures the essence of Awen Film: a production house that illuminates untold stories with intention and depth. Inspired by cinema’s power to frame, reveal, and provoke, this brand identity explores the visual language of projection—light, shadow, and space. It’s bold yet grounded, designed to reflect both the craft of filmmaking and the layered narratives Awen Film brings to life.

By redesigning the visual identity for Awen Films, we also translated their “two-sided” reality into a clear, coherent brand system. The logo has two meanings: it is the ray of light of the projector, but also the two segments that forms it, are the two different identities that Awen represents.

The colour palette combines stark black and white with a small set of purposeful accent tones: a red drawn from political posters, archival neutrals that nod to historical material, and a grounded green for contemporary, human stories. Paired with an editorial layout style, bold uppercase typography, and stills treated almost like print posters, the system gives Awen Films a consistent way to show up - serious but accessible, crafted but economical - across films, partners, and platforms.
